Originally built in the 1980s, this Hayden Lake home carried a strong modernist influence—but over time, the space had become closed off and weighed down by heavy finishes and limited natural flow.

Our goal was not to erase its identity, but to refine it—bringing in light, opening the structure, and grounding the home in timeless materials.

Opening the Structure

To transform how the home lives and feels, we introduced three structural steel beams, allowing the kitchen and living spaces to fully open to one another and to the lake beyond.

Large multi-panel sliding doors were added along the living room walls, dissolving the boundary between indoors and out. In North Idaho, where the landscape is part of daily life, this connection was essential—bringing in natural light and extending the living experience outward.

That same intention carried into the interior details. Glass railings with a minimal base rail system from Viewrail were incorporated to preserve uninterrupted sightlines, allowing the lake and surrounding landscape to remain the focal point from nearly every vantage point.

The result is a space that doesn’t just open up structurally—but feels fully connected to its surroundings.

Grounded in Oak

Underfoot, the home is anchored in wide-plank white oak, bringing warmth, continuity, and a natural texture that will age beautifully over time.

This material language carries throughout the home—paired with slim-profile cabinetry in soft, understated tones—creating a balance between clean modern lines and a more livable, timeless feel.

A custom-built dinette was designed and crafted to match the flooring and cabinetry, seamlessly integrating into the space and reinforcing a cohesive, intentional design.

Refining the Details

Throughout the home, details were simplified and elevated.

Existing structural posts, once wrapped in plaster, are now clad in wood, tying them into the overall palette and allowing them to feel like a deliberate part of the design rather than something to hide.

Glass railings were selected to maintain open sightlines, ensuring that both the architecture and surrounding landscape remain unobstructed.

A New Center of Living

At the heart of the home, the kitchen was reimagined as both a functional workspace and a gathering point.

A waterfall island will anchor the room, complete with an integrated 55” fireplace with driftwood logs and custom built in shelving, bringing warmth and a quiet focal point that connects the space visually and physically.

Private Spaces, Thoughtfully Completed

In the primary and guest baths, the focus shifted to clarity and function.

The primary shower was fully remodeled, while a new shower was added to the guest bath—bringing both spaces up to the same standard as the rest of the home, with materials and details that feel cohesive and intentional.

Built to Endure

This project was never about following trends. It was about restoring clarity to the home’s design and building it in a way that will last.

The result is a space that feels lighter, more connected, and quietly refined—where steel provides strength, oak brings warmth, and every detail works together with purpose.
